Thee’s Something Free Inside Me 2012 mosaic 19 x 12 Wall-hanging 19 x 12 I’ve been salivating on a book of Pucci patterns and it had an influence on this piece. I’m also a huge fan of surrealism: I love their use of hidden and incongruous symbols. Their work is meaty; so much to see and puzzle over. Since hearts are regularly dismissed as overdone and/or sappy, it was important to me to convey the complex, idiosyncratic, and exuberant nature of the symbol. Ceramic, glass, smalti, millefiore. Pensioner Olga Kostina poses near a mosaic, made from plastic bottle caps, which decorates the facade of a courtyard building, in the village of Kamarchaga, in the Siberian Taiga area about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Krasnoyarsk, September 10, 2012. Kostina used more than 30,000 coloured caps to decorate her house and other constructions in the courtyard while following the techniques of macrame weaving, a technique of textile-making using knots.
